Roulette

Roulette online is played the same way as in a live casino. The object of roulette game is to guess where the ball will land after the dealer spins it around the roulette wheel. The virtual felt beside the roulette wheel has all the possible roulette numbers on it, 0-36 for a total of 37 numbers. Some roulette wheels have a double-zero (00) as well as the standard 37 numbers for a total of 38.

To bet in online roulette, you simply place your wager on a particular number. You can also bet on whether the ball will land on a red/black number, whether it will land on an odd or even number, or whether it will land in certain sections of the wheel or within certain number groupings, such as numbers 1-12. The payout odds in roulette are determined on your chances of hitting – for example, the highest odds are for a Straight-up bet, which is picking the exact number the roulette ball will land on. Although it is the hardest bet to hit, the straight up single number bet offers the highest payout reward.

No matter where you place your bet on the layout, the house edge in roulette is the same. Your return may be different depending on whether you wager on high-win wagers like Single Numbers or Splits, but the house edge remains the same, no matter the type of bet. This makes roulette an easy game to play and with the lowest house edge of all Casino games at just over 5%.

Roulette betting options:

  • Straight-up – A bet placed on a single number. This pays 35:1.
  • Split – A bet placed on the line between two numbers. If either number is rolled, your bet pays 17:1.
  • Street – A bet placed on a 3-number combination. If any of those 3 numbers come up, you get 11:1.
  • Corner – A bet placed on a 4-number combination. This pays 8:1.
  • 6-Line – A bet placed on a 6-number combination. This pays 5:1.
  • Column – A bet placed on a 12-number combination, which pays 2:1.
  • Even money bet – A bet placed on black/red, odd/even, numbers 1-18 or 19-36. Like the name suggests, these wagers are paid at 1:1.

Roulette Games

As most of the casino games, roulette can be played in a number of different ways. The two main variations are the European roulette and the American roulette. The major distinction between the two is that European roulette has one zero on its wheel whereas the American has two – zero and double zero.

European Roulette – The game is also known as Single Zero or French Roulette. European Roulette uses a wheel with 37 numbered slots from 0 to 36. Each number is either red or black with only zero being green. All of the odd numbers from 1 to 10 and 19 to 28 are red whereas even numbers in this range are black. Red numbers from 11 to 18 and 29 to 36 are all even and black ones are odd. The number sequence in European roulette is more random than in the American variant. European roulette also offers better single number bet odds, as it has one zero instead of two which results in the house edge being 1/37 – 2.7%.

American Roulette – Unlike its European equivalent, American roulette has two zero slots instead of one – zero and double zero. This also increases the total number of slots in the roulette wheel – from 37 to 38. Although this might not seem as a big difference, it has a huge impact on the odds. The house edge in American roulette is 2/38 or 5.26% which is much higher than 2.7% of the European roulette. Another difference is that in American roulette, the numbers on the wheel are put in pairs opposite to one another. However, despite the small differences, American roulette is one of the most popular casino games in both live and online casinos.

Roulette Strategy

The most important thing to know when starting to play roulette is that it is one of the funnest and most popular games, the game's format creates the thrills and big wins that people enjoy when gambling. Having this in mind, you should know that there is no actual way of beating roulette in the long run. Roulette strategy is about how get the most excitement and opportunity out of your bets.

Although roulette systems and guides abound across the internet most are variations of the mythical "Martingale system". It applied to 50/50 bets advising players to double their bet after a roulette loss. The technique was proven wrong, but we have some simple roulette strategy tips to get the most out of your bets:

  • Play European roulette instead of the American one as it has 37 numbers (the American has 38) which means that the house edge is lower (2.7% instead of 5.26%) and it increases your chances of winning.
  • Take advantage of the Surrender rule. It allows you to get back half of your bet on the even number bets should the ball land on 0 or 00.
  • Use the En Prison rule which lets you save your bet in case the roulette ball lands on 0 more than once. In roulette, if the ball lands on 0 your bet is being kept for one more spin. If your bet wins the second time, you get your money back, if it doesn't – the bet is lost.
  • Learn the odds: A 35 to 1 single number may be tough to hit, but many players favor a high risk/high pay roulette strategy. These kind of bets should not be taken by those looking for low risk roulette bets. Even money bets (1:1 - black/red, odd/even, 1-18 or 19-36) are the way to start playing roulette. Some bets may be placed on 2:1, 5:1 and 8:1 odds which in case of a win will not only compensate the losses, but will also award you with some extra money.

And remember – with so many betting options, roulette is the casino game where, with a little luck, you can win large returns very quickly. Manage your bankroll - don't ever steam and place all your chips on one bet. Most importantly never play with money you can not afford to lose ... now choose your table, get your chips and place your bets!
